Mayoral candidate profile: Aswar Rahman

Aswar Rahman is a Bangladeshi immigrant who came to the United States at the age of 6. His website states that “by directing funding towards early childhood care, expanding tuition free higher ed, and creating jobs through our city’s small businesses.” He believes his plan will “reduce poverty in Mpls from 25% to 9%.”

Rahman’s platform, as stated on his website, include:

-Investment into early childhood care for families in poverty

-Full funding for the MCTC-Augsburg Power of You program and trying to expand that to the University of Minnesota

-Creating grants for small businesses to expand their staff size

-Directing Minneapolis Police Department recruitment to high schools within the city in an effort to have a force that is more representative of the Minneapolis community

-Freeze the per capita property tax rate
